BAINES family (Montgomeryshire)
My direct ancestor, Richard Baines, of Cefn Coch, Llanllugan, Montgomeryshire, was born c1690. He married Margaret Davies at Llanfair Caereinion on 16 May 1707. His Will was dated 26 March 1779 and he died at Llanllugan on 19 Feb 1780.

His surviving children were John (1710), Richard (1712), Rowland (1718), David (1720), Jane (1723), Evan (1725), and another daughter.

Evan Baines married Elizabeth Rowlands on 6 February 1753 at Castle Caereinion. Their surviving children, all born at Llanerfyl, were Evan* (1754), Richard (18 Feb 1756), Margaret (19 Jan 1780), Edward (28 May 1762) and Hannah (14 Oct 1764).
*On the 1841 census this Evan Baines is shown as a farmer, aged 85, living at Wern, Llangadfan, together with Edward Baines aged 70.

Richard Baines, a farmer of Cyffin, Llangadfan, married Elizabeth Lloyd in 1787 and was the father of my great-great-great-grandmother, Jane Baines, who was baptised at Llangadfan on 14 October 1798, four days after her birth at Cefn Coch. Their other children were Elizabeth (29 Apr 1789), Margaret (25 Dec 1790), Evan* (8 Oct 1796), Anne (22 May 1801), and Hannah (15 Nov 1803).
*On the 1881 census this Evan Baines is recorded as 88, a pauper, living with his daughter and son-in-law at Llanfair Caereinion, Montgomeryshire.

At the time of their deaths Richard and Elizabeth Baines were living at a place named Pwll-yr-bwch (buck pool). Elizabeth was buried at Llangadfan on 19th April 1837, aged 78, and Richard on 20 April 1838, aged 84.

Their daughter Jane married William Evans, of Treflach, Oswestry, sometime before 1823 and the family moved to Wolverhampton before 1851 (see EVANS family).
William Evans died in January 1863. Jane married again, to George Phelp, a forge labourer, at St Matthew’s church on 10 November 1864. The marriage certificate gives her father’s name as Richard Baines, deceased.

George Phelp died in 1868. Jane herself died on 31 December 1881 at Frost Street, Wolverhampton, aged 88 according to the death certificate, although her actual age was 83. She was buried at Merridale Cemetery on 5 January 1882. Curiously, the cemetery records give her name as Jane Paley Phelps.
