Diaries from the Summer School 2004
Summer School Diary
My favourite day was the Drama day, as I enjoy acting and liked the script we did with Alan (below)
First we did the humpty-dumpty, confidence game
(It will make you feel stupider than you ever will be)
Then we made the script for the play on Friday and acted it out.
Finally we made props (well Mrs Mallett made props) for the show on Friday.

My Diary
Dear Diary,
Today I have been to Haywood CLC (City Learning Centre) to go on to the computers and type up our stories and our poems. I typed up my story and then my poem and then I found out that I am going to read it out tomorrow in front of parents. Brilliant. I don’t really like standing up in front of everybody but I don’t mind reading out my poem. We are going to put a big buffet on for the parents then pupils will perform a play (not me) then I think we will be reading our poems.

Today was the second day of the summer holidays and the first day of summer school at St Margaret Ward high school.
I arrived at five to nine and entered the school. I was really nervous. I was happy and sad that I was picked to participate, because it shows that I’m really clever for being chosen but I’m not very good at meeting new people so as I walked down the corridors I was slightly apprehensive.
After successfully entering the gym I was given my nametag and told to sit in my group. Firstly we had to introduce ourselves and then attempt some thinking puzzles.
Next came team thinking puzzles, we managed to complete the majority of the tasks but unfortunately my group didn’t win but we did get the best score on the pyramid puzzle.
After lunch we experienced three different activities.
First was – the planetarium, with three people coming in from keele university to teach us about the planets and our solar system.
Second was – first impressions, each member of the group was given a piece of paper. First we had to write our name at the top and then pass it around so that people could write their opinions of each other on the paper.
Finally was – the six thinking hats, in this activity Mr Chapman taught us about the thinking hats and how they can help us in discussions and debates.
Overall I think that the first day of summer school was great and I look forward to continue for the rest of the fortnight.

Today we went to Stanley head. It was Awesome! First we did canoeing on the lake. We nearly fell in. we had to get a blue duck, which was thrown across the lake. The we had to have a race. We came last, typical! Then we did orienteering. We had use a map to find Red objects that had staples in. Then we had to find some equipment to make a star gate. It was a gate with ropes in, that we had to crawl through. Finally we did climbing on the rope course. It was really high. I was dead scared. We had to jump across to another tree and stood on some ropes from at lest 25 feet in the air. I was glad to get down. I miss now it we’ve left though. It will be one of my greatest memories when I grow up.

“Survival in space”
I.C.T Day Diary
29th July 04
Today we have been at Haywood CLC copying up our poems and making a story game on PowerPoint (by the modest Mr. Chapman.)
I have also been getting pictures for our website and making them smaller so that they will fit on to the web.

Dear Diary
Its Tuesday the first day of summer school I don’t know how I feel excited to make new friend but a bit worried in case I don’t fit in. The first thing that happened was that we had a short introduction then we played fun team activities in our new teams, The L5 Society, Alien UK and The Atlantis Mission Crew. The activities contained mines, ordering,, dry skies ETC. After the activities we had a chance to get to know each other and we learned about the thinking hats and then to finish it of we went into a planetarium held by staff & students from Staffordshire University

Survival in space
Survival in space was a very memorable two weeks for pupils and teachers! Here is a diary of those two weeks.
DAY 1:
The opening day sure did make us all want to come back for more. We started of the day by being split up into three groups. The three groups were, Alien UK, The Atlantis Mission Crew and The L5 society. We did a couple of activities using paper and pen and then came the fun bit! We went outside and we saw about five or more activities for us to do. The first one for the l5 society {our group} was a ski challenge. All we had to do was split the group into four aside and we had to walk on the skis from one side to the other going in and out of cones as we did so. After that, we went onto one where you had to build two crosses, we managed to build one but got stuck on the second. Then we went on to another one where you had to stand in a circle holding a rope, with a blind fold on. Then we had to turn it into a square by guiding each other into the right position. The next one was fun we had to guide a blindfolded member across a minefield without stepping on a mine so that they don’t go CABOOM!!!
There were many other activities that we did. But that was not the only thing we did. There was a planetarium and it was ace. You had to crawl through a dark tunnel to end up in a spacious but dark dome. The man dimmed the lights even more and the show began. First of all he talked about the sun and how hot it is.
DAY 2:
Day two was cool; went to the space centre in leister, where we had so much fun. We looked at rockets, satellites and all sorts! There was even a planetarium where they were showing a Mars film! It was an unforgetable day!
DAY 3:
Stanley Head! Wow what a day. We went canooing, orienteering and we went up on high-ropes!We all enjoyed it and we even got some of the teachers up on the highropes!!!
Day 4:
We did mind mapping on that day! Vanda taught us all about our brains and how wonderful they are!

Poetry From Summer School
A Race of Two Stars
Two little stars ready to race by,
Not even stopping to say hello or goodbye.
I wonder who will get to the finish first,
Better start them soon before they disperse.
On your marks, get set, GO!
That’s it, they are off, they’ve gone at last,
We probably wont see them again,
They are going so fast.
The crowds of stars are cheering,
Roaring for their favourite.
Zoom, that’s it, past go the stars,
On past Mercury, Venus and Mars.
Racing past a star craft, I wonder what is inside,
A green chubby alien that’s very wide.
“Hello Mr. Alien” says number one.
The alien looks up but too late he’s gone.
Number two is not that fast,
He is going rather slow.
He needs to pick up speed,
Come on number two lets Go! Go! Go!
They dash up past Jupiter,
And down across Saturn’s rings.
Saturn smiles and says “Hello!”
As he sings and sings.
They are about half way there now,
And the gap is closing up.
Hang on a second, I’m wrong!
Lets go to Bob to find out what is up.
Number two has had a crash,
He has flown into Uranus.
I wonder how he is feeling,
Number one will definitely be first!
Number two is back up and flying,
And raring to win.
He’s got a long way to catch up.
It’s looking pretty grim.
Number one is nearing the end,
He is nearly at Pluto.
Just one more planet to go,
It’s bound to end soon.
Number one is the victor,
Two came a close second,
Those who were watching were very proud
As they disappeared into a cloud.

Touch Down
Oh the moon.
We’ve landed!
“One little step for man
A giant leap for mankind”
I said, “Deploy the flag we’ve landed”
On the dusty moon’s exterior.
What a beautiful planet; Saturn is
The Queen of all the planets
Jupiter, her king by her side
What a beautiful planet; Saturn is.
Back down to earth we go
Saying bye to the planets all around
Our organic space rocket with a red
Beak, on the end
Back down to earth we go.

The Big Blue Planet
There are different people and children,
In this blue planet.
It is the third planet from the sun.
There are different kinds of people and
children, on this blue planet, some different
colour, some tall, some small.
On the blue planet there are countries
Like the UK, Italy, Spain, New Zealand,
France, Thailand, and Germany.
Do you know what the planet is called?
Yet!
No! Well let me carry on telling you about
The big blue planet.
The blue planet lies between Venus and Mars,
15,000,000 kilometres from the sun,
We have a climate to suit everyone,
Who are we?
Yes!
The blue planet is…
THE EARTH !!!

Heading for the stars.
Heading for the stars,
Past Jupiter and Mars.
Dreaming then of space,
In the universes’ race!
Zooming high into the sky,
Waving the world goodbye.
Hand in hand,
We’ll conquer this land.
Heading for the stars!
We’re ready to meet new creatures,
With a variety of features.
Twenty seven feet,
Ears that meet,
Heading for the stars.
Little green men laughing,
Or fury creatures bathing.
Enormous fuzz balls.
Bigger than malls,
Heading for the stars!
Heading for the stars,
Past Jupiter and Mars.
Dreaming then of space,
In the universes race!

A Colossal Space
A Colossal Space,
Has no human race.
It’s dark and grey,
But you’re easily led astray.
For people have endeavoured
As space has been explored.
It can never be measured,
But you can never get bored.
Space is giant,
But very defiant.
Filled with 9 planets,
They spread like gannets.
A small step for mankind
A place that can be distinguished.
And still it challenges the mind,
But can be anguished.
A Colossal Space,
Has no human race.
It’s dark and grey,
But you’re easily led a stray.

My Planet
I have 5 electrical tentacles,
And my clear dazzling neck.
Which is rubbed by my 4 giant hands
That are connected to my 3 eyed face.
I’m off to show you my planet,
And the sights that we can see,
The droplets of colourful rain,
And the shooting stars that hurtle across the surface of space.
We struggle against tremendous storms,
That trembled our planets and make the worst craters,
They look like they’ve been dug by one million dogs,
Trying to bury their gigantic, greasy bones.
The sun blazes down on us,
It scorches us all of the time,
It never halts, it never rests,
He is the father of us all.
Stars in the far distance,
Shimmer like tiny lamps,
They zoom in search of planets,
So they can shine their radiance all night long.
Andrew Wilkinson
Andrew’s sitting in his seat,
Nervous as can be,
Looking at his two children,
Scared for them is he.
Without a father in the house,
For well more than a year,
With that gang just down the road,
Will they live in fear?
It’s too late now,
Final checks are done,
Will he win the space race?
Is he number one?
There he goes blasting off,
With his wife in mind,
He is leaving the atmosphere,
What a bumpy ride!
A few months later,
Andrew’s made his mark,
He planted his flag,
But what a shock
When something very small and round,
Let out an unearthly sound,
And peered from beneath the ground,
To scuttle of and sit on a tiny mound,
When Andrew went to pick it up,
He found to his surprise,
Those on its back were,
Its huge puppy-dog eyes.
Andrew took it back to the ship,
And tested it for illness,
Then checked the alien database,
But found that it was listless.
Andrew took it back to earth,
Where studied the alien was,
They thought that originally,
The alien was from Mars.
Andrew was set to receive a medal,
A sort of space race prize,
But he would not accept it,
To everyone’s surprise.
He said he didn’t need it,
He’d already got enough,
He was feeling tired,
And just a little rough.
Then Andrew awoke with a jolt,
To the sound of his alarm clock,
Ready to go to school,
And another day of mock

The Unforgettable and the Unimaginable
Setting off to unknown space,
The strange expression on my face.
A really big smile to disguise my fear,
5…4…3…2…1… is all I can hear.
Then I hear a massive blast,
For some reason I see my past.
Am I that scared? It cannot be,
Only the negative is what I see.
Leaving the atmosphere brings the rocket to quiet,
I can see over the window what a sight.
From blue to black with twinkling stars,
Pluto, Saturn, Moon and Mars.
We get out of our seats and begin to float,
Like on calm sea in a sailing boat.
The most brilliant feeling ever felt,
It felt bizarre, like you could melt.
I put on my suit and attached the air,
For about five minutes, I could only stare.
At the mind blowing Galaxies and the Milky Way,
Then I pulled it open, the white doorway.
I looked outside and saw an endless pool,
I was standing shaking like a fool.
I couldn’t do it, I was to scared,
But somehow the feeling seemed to be shared.
I closed my eyes, run and jumped,
I opened my eyes, I hadn’t been dumped.
Staying still I looked around,
Problem was there was no sound.
I was ecstatic; I was floating in space,
However, horrible gases went past my face.
There was no oxygen so nothing was flammable,
This was an experience truly unforgettable and unimaginable.
By Aaron Davies
The sun is like the biggest face,
It shines for many a mile.
It’s the biggest of the sphere race,
It doesn’t stop shining, not even for a while.
Jupiter acts like the ruler,
Of all the other eight.
He’s like the greatest dueller,
But not a very good mate.
The great planet Saturn,
Is the queen to this great dueller.
It has rings of a fabulous pattern,
And she’s almost, the greatest ruler.
Pluto is the timorous one,
He hides a far distant away.
Earth is the only one,
That has people to experience the day.
Mars is a big red rock,
It’s like a glowing ball.
And I am an alien that like’s to mock,
About everything and more.
Benjamin R. Finney
Aliens Landing on Earth.
The aliens have come to Earth,
In a flying saucer.
They have landed on the Earth,
In the heart of London.
When they were landing an asteroid hit,
In the heart of London.
When the asteroid hit,
The aliens had landed.
When the aliens had landed,
They were on the tower of London.
The asteroid had come down so strong,
It blew up the tower of London.
When they got out of their ship,
They were holding ray guns.
They attempted to blow everyone up,
But out came Tony Blair.
The Prime Minister got blown up,
Because he tried to stop them
Then the aliens flew off,
Back to their home planet.

The Solar System
Venus, the searching planet,
With her burning firing surface,
Watches over all the little planets,
Like Pluto Mercury and Mars.
Uranus, on the other hand,
Rolls along on its side.
Nights last for forty years,
On one of its luminous blue sides.
Then there’s me,
The elegant, royal planet.
So you’d better watch out,
I can be feisty;
I’m Saturn the beautiful white queen.
There are some planets I don’t like
And mars is one of them
He thinks he’s better because he’s small
I’ll show him he’s not so good at all.
Mercury is blue
A luminous blue that is
That’s my favourite colour
But I haven’t told him yet.
Earth is a lovely colour
A mix of blue and green.
He’s really quite a hunk
But what can I say?
I’m the luxurious white queen.
Neptune with its rings of gold
Sits next to Uranus
She says he’s quite annoying
But what can I do?
Jupiter is BIG
Bigger than us all.
He’s even bigger than me
He’s like a giant ball.
So that’s all the planets
And how they feel
The universe keeps going round
It’s like a great big wheel
By Georgina Bennett
The Planets in Venus‘s view!
The sun’s a ball of honey,
and we,
the planets are the bees.
Mercury is hot! Believe it or not.
He’s the youngest and the smartest
with his starry grin.
Me, I’m Venus! And a royal
princess indeed. I’m the one
who’s the prettiest with my
scorching hot surface.
Earth’s full of humans, they
think there so big, but
compared to the universe
they’re microscopic bugs.
Mars what a hunk. I love his
rusty sphere, but stupid earth
is in the way of me getting near!
Jupiter is the mighty king with
muscles that dwarf me!
He’s made Saturn his ringed white
queen and they enslave all their
neighbours.
Saturn is my heroin. How I want
to be her. With her long mystical
rings and sparkling, gleaming eyes.
What a beauty queen she is.
Uranus is amazing,
An electric blue diamond
On show on the outskirts of our galaxy.
Neptune I hate! He made me lose a
Mate, so me and him had a fight and
He knocked me on a tilt!
Pluto is so far, far away! Every day’s a
New cold day. So get out your planet
Coats and put on your star muffs and
Don’t venture to the Icy Pluto.
So that’s the universe
with the stars so bright,
and the moons small light,
but they
don’t stop the universe
from being eternal night.
By Hannah Maxfield
Blast Off!
When I looked up at a rocket,
Which we were about to fly,
When my family and friends said goodbye,
I climbed up a ladder, to get to the top,
Of the rocket tall and thin.
The astronauts and me,
Said farewell to everyone,
As the countdown began,
Ten, nine, eight, seven, six,
I began to feel scared.
Five, four, three, two, one,
Just one more second till blast off,
My heart began to beat so fast,
I didn’t know what to do,
BLAST OFF!!!
I shouted as loud as I could,
To my family and friends,
Would I come back?
I did not know,
Or would I be all alone.
BY JAMIE SWIFT
There’s something out there, out there, out there
Something bright and yellow,
Something big and hot,
Something shining likes a star.
Something that shoots speeding light
Something standing out in the dark of space.
There’s someone out there, out there, out there.
Someone always watching us,
Someone flying in a saucer,
Someone perhaps thinking of how to take over the world.
Someone living in another planet.
There’s something out there, out there, out there.
Something all ways targeting Earth.
Something big and bulky,
Something capable of demolishing Earth.
There’s something out there, out there, out there.
Something we sent up,
Something we built,
Something always monitoring every move I make.

SPACE
When I wake up in the morning
Not all is what it seems,
I drift right in the world of make believe
Between real life and my dreams.
Strange adventures from the space book
I read an hour before,
Crowd up in my sleepiness
Through an open door.
Between sleeping and waking
The alarm clocks jangling cry,
Becomes a hungry Martian
And carry’s me through the nigh.
My bed becomes an alien spaceship,
In which I travel alone,
Me, and the hungry Martian
Travel to planets still unknown.
Outside through the mists of morning
The shining lights of cars,
In my make believe space world
Are eternities of stars.
Is that my mother calling something
But I cannot understand,
Maybe it’s the king Martian
Or a far of mission command.
If I make believe my ceiling
Its space through which I fly,
If I make believe my bedroom
It’s a capsule trough the sky
If I make believe my the light bulb
It becomes a glowing moon
That’s what it is, that what it is,
that’s what it is for me

The Dragon of the Sun
The Dragon of the Sun,
An almighty creature,
Of colossal size.
Strength of a thousand elephants.
It’s a most astounding feature.
Eyes of a rabid wolf,
Face of a sinister snake,
Body the size of two hundred skyscrapers.
The universes’ power left in its wake.
The sun itself,
Home of the monstrous beast.
Roaring flames dancing over the surface.
Molten rock and liquid gas from which the fierce one feasts.
The questions still remain.
Where did it appear from?
How did it materialise?
When did it come into being?
And does it have another home?

Diaries From The Summer School 2005
Star date 25,07,2005 (earth years)
„X Day 1 of the space summer school.
Today I met some nice earthlings. They all introduced themselves to each other by this strange game called Bingo! I found out that most of the little earthlings and some of the taller earthlings didn¡¦t like something called a ¡§Sprout¡¨. These are some kind of odd small green type of plant food that they eat at a time called ¡¥Christmas¡¦. I don¡¦t even know what Christmas actually is. I think it is something at the end of the year where you pass presents around. As if these earthlings haven¡¦t got enough things to annoy us with.
Star date 26.07.2005
Today I went with the earthlings to what they call their national space centre. I saw an antique antiquated space ship thingamabob. I don¡¦t fancy their chances flying about one hundred million miles in one of their small, cramped and extremely unusual flying machines to visit me.
Star date 28.07.2005
Today I encountered human first aid which means that they try to help each other breathe and stop them leaking this red liquid stuff. The worst part of this is that they were doing it to a lifeless dummy named Annie. It had no ligaments and every time you pushed down on her middle part she clicked which must have meant that earthlings can¡¦t do life keeping. I would hate to have one of their body breakers try to save my lifeless body from floating into space.
Star date 29.07.2005
Today me and all of the earthlings did the other half of the human first aid and got what the earthlings call a ¡§qualification.¡¨ My alien sources tell me that the earthlings use one of these to get themselves a job. I don¡¦t need one of these because my job is to try and not get blown up by one of the earthlings new toys. Those of you who think this is funny I blow up into lots of slime and float down to earth when I am frazzled.
The End!!
After a week with the Earthlings I have decided to go back to my Planet!
